What are Task Models?
In mathematics, a task model provides a description of an item/task’s key features. These task models describe the knowledge, skills, and processes being measured by each of the item types aligned to particular targets. In addition, the task models sometimes provide examples of plausible distractors. In English & Language Arts (ELA), these functions are carried out through item specifications.
These task models were developed for each grade level and target in order to delineate the expectations of knowledge and skill to be included on test questions in each grade. The task and stimulus models also provide information on characteristics of stimuli or activities to avoid because they are not important to the knowledge, skill, or process being measured.
How do I use them with my students?
Each task model is encased within a dotted box for easy cutting. Teachers may use this in either print or digital (e.g. printed cards, digital snippets of individual task models). The recommended paper size is 11x17 tabloid paper (orientation: landscape). The Task Models are a great resource when building Smarter Balanced-aligned Common Formative Assessments and Local Interim Assessments. The more students are exposed to examples of test items they may encounter on the Smarter Balanced summative assessment, the better prepared they will be when it's time to take the state test.
